- We are now entering our fifth week of the spring term and our "Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One-Discovering the Dream" students are preparing to deliver their Work History/Personal Timelines. Meanwhile the "CMC-Part Two-Forming the Dream" participants are fine tuning their Vision and Mission Statements and moving on to the Marketing issues. Both groups are making splendid progress.

- From Velvette Delaney- Graphic Designer- "An exhibit I just finished is up at the California African American Museum right now! It's about African Americans in the judicial system. There's something so exciting about seeing your work larger than life on the side of a building and across an entire room. I'm not sure how long it will be up, but I'll be sure to bring pictures to the next Schmoozfest."

"I just completed a commission for a hospital--the images attached are for a radiation treatment room--and are designed to reflect the healing properties of the radiation beams. They will actually be in the treatment area for the benefit of the patients, not simply displayed for the public. I really enjoy doing this type of work."

- On the morning of January 16, a great family man, friend, mentor, and artist, Barry Wetmore, passed away. Barry (shown above with his lovely wife Gail) was given a beautiful memorial at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, "Wetmore's Closing Show," in which some of those who were privileged to spend time with him were able to share stories of the great impact he had on their lives. Bitter-sweet. We all miss you Barry and thank you for your many gifts, and will treasure the lessons we learned from you.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest a tax deductible donation in the memory of Barry Wetmore to the Armory Center for the Arts to support children's art education in Pasadena.

- Our "Crafting a Meaningful Career" classes have gotten off to a great start this spring term at the Art Center College of Design-Public Programs. We have a large class in "Part One-Discovering the Dream" and have just started with the assignment where the participants bring in examples of the work they "LOVE" to create (shown above). And in the "Part Two-Forming the Dream" class we are working up to the development of each individuals Vision Statement which will lead to the Mission Statement and the execution of their business plans and/or life plans. This is an exciting time as we watch everyone take charge of their careers.

- On January 9 Tony Luna delivered his "The Art and Craft of the Pitch" workshop to an enthusiastic group of students at the Woodbury University School of Media, Culture and Design. Special thanks to Bruce Cook, Ph.D, Chair of the Department of Filmmaking and teacher of the communications class, and to Sue Vessella, Chair of Graphic Design for coordinating this opportunity to enhance the capabilities of their students. The participants were fully involved and now have another tool to advance their careers.

The registration fee is €300 (euro), covering access to all sessions, two lunches, coffee breaks and conference material. Well time certainly does fly! I think it has been forever and a day since we last spoke. Figured I would catch you up on some of the latest. Last October I took a leap at a new adventure, packed up and sold (most of everything I owned) – including all my art (that was fun) and moved from my studio at the Brewery to... (wait for it...) the East Coast. Salem Ma to be exact. Why you ask? To experience seasons and something new! Well, seasons we certainly have been experiencing. When it first started snowing last year I was sitting outside and watching these lil' white specks floating to the earth… So what did I do, I starting scanning the horizon for the smoke clouds, I thought they were ashes. Well, that's what a California gal does when she is first experiencing a new climate.

As the winter progressed, so did the blizzards, seems we came just in time to witness the worst winter in something like 30 years. Well, it didn't bother me too much for one, nobody from the East Coast goes walking down the street in the middle of a blizzard, so Rebecca and I had this winter wonderland all to ourselves! And two, as soon as we got here and unpacked, I received a call from my clients in Switzerland and they proposed a new challenge...

Could I complete not 1, but 2 children's books back to back in 8 months? Well, do I look like the sort to back down from a challenge? (no, I think not)... so I dug in and working (I did the math) an average of 63.3 hours a week... I did indeed live up to the challenge! Two books were completed! 'Route 66' was the first one, and that was released in stores in Switzerland in June. And the 2nd (my clients had clients) they were approached by a store called Loeb (kinda like the Macy's of Switzerland) it was coming up on their 100th anniversary and they wanted to do a book exclusively for their store to be released in time for Christmas this year! I finished about a month ago...
I am just now starting to feel like my old self, this year has been exhausting, but I am proud of my work and my accomplishments!

- Registration for the Spring 2012 term classes at Art Center at Night began November 28. You may sign up for any of our classes and/or you can encourage your friends to take advantage of the class offerings.

All classes of the "Crafting a Meaningful Career" classes will be from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the Art Center at Night South Campus (950 South Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, California). I will be offering the following three classes this term. (See full "Course Descriptions" below). Class dates:
- The following classes will begin the week of January 16-
"Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One, Discovering the Dream" will run from Tuesday, January 17 to Tuesday, April 17.

- From Diane Russell, PhD, Cinema and Audiovisual Studies- "Dear Tony, It was tough but I finally got my PhD in 'Cinema and Audiovisual Studies' from the Sorbonne, after a 4 hours defense! Now I'm in China, Shanghai, visiting my sister who's an Architect, and helping her out on a project with some Photoshop and Illustrator assignments. I'm also 'long distance freelancing' at the same time, starting a storyboard for a French feature film.
I'm still looking for a way to go back and stay in L.A.. I'm hoping that my PhD will open a few doors: teaching storyboards in a film or art school would be great! …Sending one bottle in the sea of your worldwide connections can't hurt!

…Here are some pictures of my defense but they are not super exciting for someone who hasn't been there, because there's no diploma ceremony like in the US, no graduation party (just a glass of Champagne and some fancy food bites that I had organized in a restaurant near by) and it wasn't in one of the most famous decorated rooms of the main Sorbonne building.

…About the dress: it was an American Ralph Lauren dress. I was wearing a piece of United States to help me think positive "YES WE CAN!" ;-)

When I started creating content for kids, it was about finding a fun way to teach reading to my baby Niko and toddler Cosima. We animated the alphabet and flashcards and created lovetoread.com. Then we produced more animations, products and workshops and we noticed how our focus shifted from reading tools to creativity tools. While we still love 'love to read' (and always will !!!) our work expanded to teach kids creative problem solving and divergent thinking. Depending on the age group we work on 3-d typography, character design and stopmotion. Kids and teens learn about the power of the written word, the significance of using the right typography and how to (create) stopmotion animate titles. These skills empower kids, they become directors and designers of their own lives. We figured that creative thinking is the one skill that is much needed in our crazy times and unpredictable future. - From Martin Ledford, Photographer, Director of Photography- "Hello- Several weeks ago I was hired to shoot four mini-videos for the fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. …I was hired to photograph a fashion event. Then, less than 36 hours before the event, I was asked to shoot video instead. Fortunately, I had been teaching myself FCPX the past few months. It also helped that I shoot with a Canon 5D MK II which allowed me to capture HD video. It was a very odd experience changing horses in midstream like that. But I learned so much--and had a great time, too. …It was a great experience for me and I worked with the amazing Brad Goreski--who has so much fun energy that he makes any shoot an event. …I thought you may enjoy seeing the end results."

- From Harvey Chua, Photographer, Manilla, The Philippines- "Hi Tony, Thanks for sending us updates about you, and other photographers - especially those who attend your classes and seminars.
I'm sending you a copy of one of our local newspapers that did a story on our advocacy - Photography with a Difference. My AB Photography students at the College of Saint Benilde photographed 20 children with cancer under the care of Kythe Foundation. To prepare the students for this project, we conducted workshops on children and family portraiture, as well as an orientation lecture on how to relate with or handle children with cancer. A local mall, SM Supermalls, provided the children's families with gift certificates so they could buy color coordinated clothes for the portrait session, while Canon Philippines brought Selphy printers so that the families could receive instant prints. The entire project - to be done within a year - would serve 200 children, and will be handled by various student photographers all over the country. A photo exhibit, called "Colors of Hope" will be held at SM at the end of next month.

I have also attached a portrait of one of the children by Apple Villalobos, a graduating AB photography student.

The following article appeared in the Art Center on-line magazine, The Dotted Line, which featured a conversation with Tony Luna, Creative Career Consultant, on the topic of the classes he teaches through Art Center at Night to mid-career professionals who are looking to take their careers to the next level.

Tony Luna on Crafting a Meaningful Career:

Change naturally occurs as careers evolve. Sometimes change is forced upon us; sometimes we have to make it happen.

Based on the principles laid out in his book, How to Grow as a Photographer: Reinventing Your Career, creative consultant, artist and educator Tony Luna created Crafting a Meaningful Career, a series of Art Center at Night courses aimed at helping mid-career professionals revitalize their career perspectives.

We recently took a much-needed break from our day-to-day assignments to ask Luna more about his course.

Dotted Line: Tell me about Crafting a Meaningful Career.

Tony Luna: The course is loosely based on my own personal life. Looking back at my career, I realized that every five to seven years, there was some change that had to take place. Sometimes it was caused by the economy, sometimes it was caused by technology, and sometimes it was caused by boredom. I started talking to other people, and virtually everybody I talked to had the same kind of challenges. The basic tenet of the course is that, no matter what, from time to time we have to change and we have to grow, so the Crafting a Meaningful Career courses are about taking control and being able to create a new paths for ourselves. It could be a small change or it could be a large change. I advocate that people take a serious, mature look at what they've accomplished, give themselves credit for all they've been able to achieve, and then plot out a plan for where they'd like to take their career.

Dotted Line: You say people need to take credit for what they've accomplished so far. Do people commonly feel like they need to start all over and everything they’ve done up to this point is worthless?

Luna: People acquire skills along the way that they don't even recognize. They pick up organizational or communication skills, learn languages or become computer savvy. And they think that's just what they had to do. We often float through life and don't recognize the impact our personal experiences can have in expanding our business opportunities. I have an assignment in class called “asset matching” where I ask students to examine their skill sets, their unique experiences, their interests and their influences. They write down what they have going for them, and then as a group we try to find new options for how they can turn their career into something that makes them excited about starting each day. That’s the “meaningful” part.

Dotted Line: So it's not just about landing that next big gig? But rather doing something personally fulfilling?

Luna: We often have preconceived notions about where we think we're supposed to be and those hold us back. We don't know why we feel disenchanted; we just feel like we're treading water. But when you get into situation where other people start to recognize what you have going for you, then you start believing in yourself. And there might be some dramatic options that open up. But even if they're not dramatic, they're valuable options in that they can make you feel like every day is really more exciting than the last.

Dotted Line: So your classmates can see things in yourself that you can’t see, because you’re too close to it?

Luna: Right. I give another assignment in which each student walks up to the whiteboard and presents a timeline of their life. They can pick up at any point they want to—their birth, graduation from high school, whenever—and bring it all the way to the present. They draw a horizontal line and above the line they list significant events that happened in their personal life and below the line they list significant events in their work life. The outcome of that assignment is that students can see, in a very graphic way, how there are certain times when they have been highly productive and other periods when they’ve settled for mediocrity, because everything is safe and everything is cool. But that always begs the question, what are you going to do when things come to a screeching halt?

Dotted Line: Who takes your class?

Luna: Usually mid-career professionals, people in their late 30s to mid-50s. But not always. I do get some younger people in their 20s and that amazes me. I wish I had taken a class like this in my 20s, because I would have known what to expect. It helps you be a little more prepared for the future if you recognize that there will be times when you're working hard, and it's wonderful and you think it's going to go on forever, and then there will be times when nobody returns your phone calls. And what do you do? You can sit there and have a pity party and say the world doesn't love you anymore and that you’re no longer relevant. But once you get past that denial and anger you need to figure out what you're going to do and work your way out of it.

Dotted Line: These sound like pretty universal problems you’re dealing with.

Luna: These issues are pervasive. They're not only directed towards photographers, graphic artists or illustrators. They’re directed towards the general public. I've had people from all areas of interest take my class.

I received an email from a stand-up comedian who picked up my book, How to Grow as a Photographer: Reinventing Your Career, and he said, “You know, if you swap out ‘photographer’ for ‘stand-up comedian,’ this is the same stuff I deal with.” Everybody has their ups and downs. Everybody has a time when they need to give themselves credit for what they’re doing. And everybody needs to look forward to doing something different and satisfying and so unique that it’ll set the world on fire. And the very best part about this course is that you get to create a template for how to execute positive effective change for yourself.

Dear Family and Friends, I’ve always had a passion for international travel, education and learning about other cultures, as you probably already know. From my own study-abroad experience in Chile, and other globe-trotting adventures, I know first-hand how incredible and life-changing it is to live in another country, learn another language, and experience life from an entirely new perspective. Now I have the opportunity of passing that gift forward, by helping international high school students spend a semester or academic year here in the US.

I would really appreciate it if you would consider helping me in my efforts, through any of these things:
- Host an international student! Of course, this is not a commitment that I take lightly…and I know it’s not for everyone. But, it truly is a life-changing experience for you, your family, your community and the student. Most host families will say that by the end of the experience, they feel that they have gained a family member for life. I am still in touch with my host family in Chile and I can honestly say that my host family was the most important and most incredible part of my entire study abroad experience. (Quick note: we would need to check with your local High School to be sure that they are willing to accept the exchange student.)

- Ask your friends/family if they would consider hosting a student!
- School contacts? If you know anyone that works for, with, or volunteers at a local high school or school board, I’d love to find out if their school would accept an exchange student!
- Pass along this message to your friends and family to see if they might be interested!

My organization, the Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI), places students everywhere in the US (yes, even in Hawaii and Alaska!) Feel free to spread this message far and wide! We have so many incredible students, from 55+ countries, and each and every one of them is so excited to become part of an American family. WHAT: Proceeds will benefit Real Medicine Foundation's efforts in Shinuhayr, Armenia and its surrounding seven villages dedicated to child-maternal health, childhood vaccinations, ambulance services, and assistance to aiding children facing severe health crisis. The Shinuhayr primary care clinic provides free medical, preventative and public health services to a community of 8,000 within the Syunik region where 90% of the population are living in dire poverty. The prestigious Forbes magazine published a list of the world’s ten worst economies in which Armenia occupies the second place next to Madagascar.

I thought you might have crossed paths with some good candidates. Please pass along her note as appropriate. I don't know any more about it than described here. Application deadline is September 23.

From Dr. Rebull: Are you, or do you know of, any educators who might be interested in doing authentic astronomical research with NASA data, and who are willing to take three all-reasonable-expenses-paid trips?

NITARP is now accepting applications for 2012. The application site is ready, and you can upload your application any time before Sep 23! NITARP, the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program, gets teachers involved in authentic astronomical research. We partner small groups of educators with a mentor professional astronomer for an *original* research project. The educators incorporate the experience into their classrooms and share their experience with other teachers. The program runs January through January. Applications are available *now* and due on September 23.

This program, to the best of our knowledge, is completely unique in the following two important ways: (1) each team does original research using real astronomical data, not canned labs or reproductions of previously done research; (2) each team writes up the results of their research and presents it at an American Astronomical Society meeting (the AAS is the professional organization for astronomers in the US). Each team also presents the educational results of their experience in the program.

Most, but not all, of our educators are grade 8-13; informal educators have participated as well. The kinds of educators we are looking for are those who already know the basics of astronomy, are interested in learning exactly how astronomy research is conducted, and are willing to share their experiences with colleagues and students in their environment. Three all-reasonable-expenses-paid trips are integral to the program!

Greetings, You are invited to participate in the latest design research for the improved integration of business and design, thus reducing market and execution risk to businesses. Please suggest challenges you think designers can lift. This summer, using agile design research, we conducted design challenges on LinkedIn Groups addressing: Design and Animal Rescue, Peace Design Journalism and Design and Social Change. ONE WORRY-FREE DAY

MANILA, Philippines — Imagine living a life where eating any form of protein can cause seizures and neurological damage.

Or imagine living with a kind of neuromuscular disorder that limits facial muscle movements, prevents a smile and restricts the ability to speak. Or perhaps another condition where one wrong step or little physical movement may cause instant bone fracture.

Some people do not have to imagine all these because they do actually live with these conditions, suffering from rare diseases with no known cure. They try hard to live a normal life but their condition prevents them from doing so.

For instance, eight-year-old Gwen Torres suffers from a rare disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) or more commonly known as “brittle bone disease”. OI is a congenital disease, and is caused by a defect in the gene that produces type 1 collagen, an important building block of bone.

It weakens the bone making it prone to fractures.

“When she was two years old, Gwen tripped over a raised side of the floor linoleum. She broke her left upper leg and her left upper arm. We were confused because she instantly broke both bones with just a fairly small tumble,” Gwen’s dad Ronnel recalls.

Gwen’s leg and arm were immediately put in a cast. But after they healed, more fractures happened, no matter if Gwen was just sitting or lying down!

Although Gwen has physical limitations, her physical and mental development are normal. She is now in Grade 2 and is trying to live her life as normal as possible.

Gwen and her family were recently part of a group from the Philippine Society of Orphan Disorders (PSOD) who toured Manila Ocean Park and Museo Pambata. The special event, dubbed as “Rare Moments”, is another project of Photography with a Difference (PWD). PWD is led by renowned photographer and advocate John Chua who aims to create public awareness about persons with disabilities (PWDs) through beautiful photographs. This event was made possible by Canon Philippines, Canon A-Team, SM Program for Disability Affairs, Manila Ocean Park, and Museo Pambata.

Vee had his doctors appointment last week and he is progressing very well (I could see his face getting better every day in the past 2 weeks, but hearing that he is doing well from both doctors, was a great relief) So, his facial paralysis is almost back to the post operative state and he can slowly start practicing driving and start going on the computer (until he gets tired) - he just needs to listen to his body :) In fact, if you would see him in person, you wouldn't even know that he had a brain surgery :) Except that he still gets tired pretty fast, but that should get better with time - hopefully in next six moths :)

We both are very appreciative Tony of your prayers and your support! Vee is the best proof that the prayers are being answered!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are very grateful!!!!!

Make sure you take in the incredible exhibit of the artwork by John Frame at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Due to increased demand the exhibit, "Three Fragments of a Lost Tale - Sculpture and Story by John Frame" has been extended one week to June 27.

(A serendipity story)- I had a chance to meet with Mr. Frame on Sunday, June 12 and to give him an antique scientific instrument I had purchased at a swap meet many years ago and was going to throw away. But, after experiencing his powerful artwork about a month ago it occurred to me that he could put it to good use. And after emailing him that I wanted to give him the microscope he responded that he would accept it. When I took the instrument out of the bag to show it to him his eyes lit up and he said he knew exactly how he could use it in one of his upcoming art pieces. I was thrilled as I handed over the device to him. Above is a photo which my wife, Paula, shot of the exchange. I can hardly wait to see how he is going to give it new life!

First, I wanted to say thank you for the incredible love and support that you’ve sent our way during Vee’s surgery – we couldn’t have pulled through this challenging time without you….

After a very successful brain surgery and promising post-operative recuperation, Vee is on a slow road to recovery, as there has been some recent set backs that slowed down the process. Unfortunately I did not get enough interest this summer term to justify running our Tuesday evening class, "Crafting a Meaningful Career-Part One- Discovering the Dream." However there is a wonderful group of participants enrolled in the Thursday evening class, "Crafting a Meaningful Career- Part Two- Forming the Dream" and I am very excited to work with this talented group of professionals.

I would like your feedback with suggestions on how I can make the Part One class more accessible, such as possibly making it a two-part class (seven weeks each) which would make it more flexible for people who would want to take it in the summer but still want to have time for a vacation. Also I am open to suggestions to conduct weekend workshops (such as one put forward by Diana Mulvihill on Self-Promotion and Marketing for Creative Professionals). Dear Friends: Great news from Vee Vitanza and his wife Izabela Berengut Vitanza! I just received the following email and I wanted to pass it along as soon as possible. Thanks to all of you for your generous contributions and good wishes for a successful outcome.

'Success!'

Hi Guys!

As some of you may already know, Vee's surgery went very, very well! or as one of the Doctors said: "Better then expected!" :) They were able to remove the entire tumor, without damaging the facial nerve! We are very grateful to the entire team of doctors and nurses from the House Ear Clinic and St. Vincent's Medical Center for their care and incredible, top of the line skills, and we are grateful to You, for your help in making this surgery possible.

Vee was moved from ICU yesterday and will start his physical therapy later today. If everything goes as predicted, he will be released home on Sunday.

Thank you again for your help, loving care, prayers and good wishes. He loved to hear them yesterday, as i was reading him your notes after they transferred him from ICU; they kept his spirit up, away from pain.

Your prayers and positive energy helped him out during the surgery and will keep helping in his recovery, in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you again for everything! Sending you big hugs from both of us!

- From John Anderson, Photographer and Retired Lutheran Minister- "Tony: just wanted to follow up on the last email I sent you regarding the contract I just obtained. It's with a company…in Charleston, S. C. and they produce computer interactive teaching programs in mathematics, and they also publish mathematics text books (hopefully I'll also get to design some textbook covers for them).

I thought you'd find the process of how this happened interesting. About three years ago, the wife of the CEO of this company saw one of my images she liked. She kept asking another friend about it, but never seemed to get around to seeing it. She recently invited my friend and myself to come to Charleston and bring the work. She and her husband bought it for their lovely home on James Island overlooking Charleston Harbor. Her husband asked me to come and look at their new corporate headquarters, which I did. He then asked if I would submit some design ideas for his lobby, which I did. He approved these, and asked me to do two additional images for the board room, which I just completed.

It's fascinating how coincidences can work to our benefit. If she had purchased the picture three years ago, the new project would not have been available at that time, and I might never have gotten the contract. Circumstances can really make a difference in terms of what comes our way. In addition to this project, and the possibility of the textbooks, they will be building a new building next year, and I may perhaps be asked to do the art work for that project as well.

One of the really good benefits of this is that it puts me in a whole new level--and it confirms me as a serious commercial artist. I am hoping this will help open doors for me with additional potential jobs. It sure pays to stick with the passion through the thick and the thin. I'm so glad that my first major commission is with an international corporation. I think this will give me a better chance of getting my work reviewed by other commercial clients.

It's been a journey to this point, and I feel like this confirms your words about passion.

(Editor's note: In a later email John wrote the following important passage that has to be passed along.) ...I think one of the things we artists have to do, and we're usually reluctant to do, is realize that we are in a business. We are so frequently caught up in our art that we don't realize we have to develop the skills to do business and sell art. I think it's extremely important for artists to understand this and embrace it, if they are going to sell their art. I've still got a long way to go in this regard, but it has helped me a lot to take on more of these aspects, to learn them, and hopefully, in time to practice them.

It's something artists don't always want to hear, but something we need to hear. I think my willingness to do this has helped me get this contract. I still have a log way to go, but accepting this is a large part of moving forward.

I don't know if you're familiar with Jack White's books on selling art--they can be kind of corny at times, but he has a system that is rally helpful to artists, and I recommend them as good sources. He's the state artist of Texas and an old fashioned cowboy--but he understands how to sell art. You might want to check out some of his things."

- St. Finbar's Church, Leadership Workshop-

Through the generosity of Father Albert Bahhuth, Tony Luna delivered a presentation titled, "Leadership Through Inspiration" Monday, March 28. This was the third in a series of leadership workshops for the ministry leaders of The Catholic Community of Saint Finbar's Church, Burbank, CA. In this presentation Tony examined the qualities common to good leaders, helped the participants investigate their own roles, and to define ways to be more effective leaders. The participants broke into groups and discussed how they could join forces in support of each other, and how to identify leaders within their groups to ensure continuity of leadership. Another workshop is being planned to be held during the summer.

Dear Friends of Tony Luna Creative:

I just received word that two of our dear friends, both graduates of Art Center, Vee Vitanza (Film Major) and Izabela Berengut (Photo Major and Photo Representative) urgently need our help. Vee, Izabela's husband, has been diagnosed with a rare brain tumor "on the balance nerve which connects the ear to the brain." Fortunately the tumor was found quickly, but unfortunately he needs to have the unique surgery--which must be paid up front--that is not covered by their Health Net Insurance. The surgery is scheduled for April 20 and a fund raiser has been coordinated to help them with the cost of the surgery. To assure they have enough money a deadline of April 10 has been set.

The following is a letter sent to me from a close friend of theirs, Aurelia Amore:

"Hello my fellow Art Center Teachers and Alumni,

I hope this email finds you well. I hate to be the barer of sad news. Hopefully, collectively we can help make a big difference.

Here's what's going on....A few weeks ago, Vee Vitanza, (Film Major), Izabela Berengut's (Photo Major) husband was diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma - a rare brain tumor on the balance nerve which connects the ear to the brain. It is located deep inside the skull and adjacent to vital brain centers in the brain stem. Approximately only 1 in 100,000 people are diagnosed each year worldwide. Not the kind of lottery anyone wants to win.

The good new is that they found it quickly. Vee suddenly went numb on one side of his face on his birthday in February. To eliminate the possibility of a stroke, he had a doctor’s appointment scheduled the following morning, and that's how they found the tumor. It a strange kind of irony of finding this kind of news out on your "birth" day. There is no real way to make sense of it, but I think that it's an opportunity for re-birth and a reminder to us all that there are no guarantees in this life and that we need to make it all count.

The treatment requires a very precise surgical procedure, which is performed by only few teams of doctors in the country. Vee's surgery will require two surgeons. Health Net Insurance does not cover doctor and procedure fees at the clinic that specializes in removal of these tumors. Yet another reminder of how sickening our health care system is and the change that need to happen.

We have set up a fund to give Vee and Izabela some financial relief during this difficult time. Not only are they challenged with hefty medical expenses; but many of the hospital bills will have to be paid up front, before the surgery on April 20th. It's going to be a tough road ahead for them both. I watched them fall in love at Art Center almost 9 years ago. They were married only 6months ago and are in for quite a challenge. I'm so glad that they have each other. Vee and Izabela together are like sunshine and filled with so much love for each other and their friends. I know that they are going to get through this, especially because they have us as friends and colleagues.

There is no easy way, no decorations, no icing to make asking for help any more charming, than simply, just asking for the help that is needed. Whatever you might be able to donate to help out, would be so greatly appreciative.

All donations will go to help cover these expenses. Donation can be anonymous, and any amount will help. We are in this together. The donations will ensure that finances do not become a source of worry for them during this time.

Please let everyone know one of your students is working for a BIG Hollywood producer :) ha ha, which knowing me, is really hilarious...I want everyone to know how great you are...I never thought I would work in Hollywood but opportunities can come from unexpected places and it's good to be prepared. The only reason I'm working at Spiritclips is because we do inspirational content. That was my main objective in your class, remember? To do something meaningful. "Hello there, It's about that time again. I just signed up to run the Mayor’s Marathon, which is taking place in Alaska on June 18th. I signed up to run this marathon with Team in Training. They will help me train while I raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Up until a few days ago, I thought I could only run about 3 miles before I would start to feel pretty annoyed and would want to stop running and grab a cheeseburger.
Well last Saturday was my first practice. I ran/walked 6 miles! (ran 3 minutes, walked 1 minute, and so on...) Some people might say that 6 miles is pretty good but there will still be another 20 miles behind that 6 so I have a lot to do. However, that’s the great thing about having already done a TNT event… I know it’s going to get easier. I know the coaches will be there to help and our honored teammates will be there to inspire. It’s tough to say “I can’t run a marathon” when I see people who are dealing with cancer doing it. It might feel like an overwhelming or crazy idea but I know it can be done. Lots of people run marathons each year. I might as well go ahead and add myself to that list…that list of doable things.

I have already raised 24% of my goal of $2,950 and more is on the way. With your help I know I can reach my goal. Amazing strides have been made over the years and the money that TNT brings to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has literally saved lives. Our team goal is $215,000. The College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for full-time teaching positions in the Department of Architecture. The initial contract will be for a three-year duration with an attractive salary and benefit package that includes housing, and places the candidate on the equivalent of a tenure-track position which translate to a full-time, four-year rolling contract at AUS.

All Architecture and Design Degree Programs at the College of Architecture, Art and Design are accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (USA) and are licensed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The Bachelor of Architecture program is fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and is the first and only program to receive this designation outside North America. The Interior Design Program may advance towards Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), and accreditation experience is desirable.

At a minimum, a Master’s degree in Architecture / Interior Design is required as well as significant academic and professional experience. Licensure in the field is desirable when applicable and available. Interest and experience in interdisciplinary design education and global practice are highly desirable. A thorough knowledge of design history, theory and practice, combined with digital skills and visual literacy, a record of professional practice, and outstanding communication skills are required.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate evidence of excellence (or the potential of, if at the level of Assistant Professor) in teaching, scholarly work and professional practice. The candidate will be expected to teach core curriculum and elective studios/classes, mentor students through an established advising process, engage in scholarship and research, and participate in service activities for the school, university and community.

Dear Arts Advocate:

Yesterday, as the federal government raced to avoid a potential shutdown, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate passed a stop-gap funding measure for FY 2011 to keep the government operational for another two weeks, while they work on a final appropriations bill for the rest of FY 2011. This legislation makes $4 billion in domestic spending cuts, including a number of federal education programs. Among the programs terminated in this legislation is the $40 million Arts in Education program (AIE) through the U.S. Department of Education which supports model arts education programs and funds VSA and the Kennedy Center arts education program as well.

This termination of the Arts in Education program is alarming, and all the more so because of the drastic cuts the National Endowment for the Arts underwent a few weeks earlier that would reduce its budget by 26%, the largest cut in 16 years!

We need to let Congress know that these cuts and terminations are unacceptable, and they should restore them in the next phase of FY 2011 funding legislation which Congress will attempt to finalize within these next two weeks. You may have heard that the U.S. Copyright Office is in the process of hiring a new Register of Copyrights. The former Register of Copyrights, Marybeth Peters, retired in December, and Maria Pallante has been appointed to be the Acting Register of Copyrights during the search process.

The Copyright Alliance has been engaging in many discussions with Maria about the important role that the Copyright Office plays in our society, and how all creators rely on the Copyright Office to be a strong advocate for artists' rights. We have also encouraged the Office to select a candidate that has an appreciation of the history of copyright, a deep understanding of copyright law and strong commitment to the principles of copyright enacted by Congress and interpreted by Courts.

- From the American Society of Cinematographers- Douglas Kirkland Wins ASC’s President’s Award (Editors note: Douglas was one of the veteran photographers interviewed in "How to Grow as a Photographer: Reinventing Your Career" by Tony Luna, Allworth Press.)

February 13, 2011 at the Hollywood and Highland Grand Ballroom, Douglas Kirkland was honored as the first still photographer to receive the coveted American Society of Cinematographers President’s Award. Kirkland, winner of the first Lucie Award for photography, also holds a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Operating Cameramen.

During an inspiring and successful career that spans almost 60 years, Kirkland has worked on over 150 films, including: Out of Africa, The Sound of Music, Titanic, Saturday Night Fever, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Australia. Several bestselling books of Kirkland’s celebrity portraits have been published among which James Cameron’s Titanic has sold more than a million copies in the United States alone.

Kirkland’s impeccable eye and great imagination have won him photography sessions with innumerable celebrities including Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, Mick Jagger, Morgan Freeman, Orson Welles, and Jacques Henri Lartigue. His fine arts photography has been exhibited worldwide and is found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Galleries in Australia and London, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, and the Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

Douglas describes himself as a still photographer with a heart for cinematography and for “finding a way”. "Hi Tony! We would love for you to reprint our email and put it on your blog.
I hope this email finds you well. My sister and I, Lindsay and Kimberly Scheel, just started a company called The Soho Project, which stands for Sisters Offering Hope to Others. It’s founded in New York City with the intention of promoting social responsibility. We will choose a different non-profit organization each month and help them fund raise in new and creative ways. One of the reasons the acronym “SoHo” was chosen is because the New York neighborhood was originally seen as an artist haven, and much of the Soho Project’s work will be done through partnering with different types of artists with a range of creative backgrounds (musicians, photographers, designers, and stylists). My sister and I had noticed a lack of options for artists to give back to their communities and the world at large. We are hoping that through this organization, we will bring more opportunities for artists to give back in creative ways.

Despite being such a new organization, the Soho Project already has several projects in the works. One of our on-going projects is providing family portraits to the terminally ill. We have partnered with students from Parsons The New School of Design, to take some of the family photos. We will arrange hair and make-up artists to go to the family photo shoot to give the patient a makeover. We want their loved ones to be remembered in the best possible light.

Friends and family of the terminally ill patient will sponsor their portrait, with the proceeds going towards an organization working to cure their illness. Though the Soho Project is run out of New York and Los Angeles, this project will take place all over the country. Once the Soho Project’s website is up and running, there will be a section of the website devoted to these portraits, including a small blurb about each of the artists involved in the portrait with links to their own websites in order to gain publicity for the artists, as well as links to the organization working to cure the illness of the person in the portrait.

We have just started our company so our website will be up in a few weeks but will not be fully functioning till May.

We are looking for professional photographers, photography students, make-up artists and hair stylists to volunteer their time, creativity and skill to this project. If you would be interested in helping, please email me back with your contact info. If you know anyone who would be interested in helping, please forward this email. We think photography is a beautiful gift to give these families. We hope to hear back from you soon."

"Hi Tony, and Happy New Year to you too!... Everything at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) continues to go well; I am very busy with things, but also very motivated. After six months here, the School of Architecture and Design became the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD). We have also gone through major renovations at the buildings of CAAD, including the addition of a very significant Material and Digital Fabrication Lab. It certainly is the lead lab in the region, and places CAAD amongst the best labs internationally. It is very exciting, and full of potential - as are most things here at this time.

We are launching another round of faculty hires, including a new Head of the Department of Design (Chair), and hopefully faculty positions in Product / Industrial Design (including Product_System_Service Design), Design Management, and History/Theory/Criticism. Creative LA is a philanthropic event created by thinkLA to unite the Los Angeles Advertising community and raise funds to benefit The Advertising Industry Emergency Fund (AIEF), Light Bringer Project/L.A. Futures Academy and

This first ever fund raising event will be held on Sunday, March 20th at the Bergamot Station - James Gray Gallery, in Santa Monica. This event will provide professionals in the advertising industry who are also artists the opportunity to showcase their original artwork. The event will bring the industry together to appreciate art during an evening of fun, conversation and networking.

We're accepting all types of art: paintings, printed pieces, multi-media, photography, freestanding sculpture, jewelry or wearable art. "Tony. I'm teaching again - "Marketing Strategies for Professional Photography" to AB Photography students.

The Photography with a Difference (PWD) advocacy is growing by leaps and bounds. Both workshop and exhibit has been done in Singapore, while Indonesia has done the workshop and now preparing for an exhibit. Two Saturdays ago, we took 30 children of different disabilities on flights aboard ultralights, microlights, Cessnas, R22 helicopters, and would you believe a 60's or 70's vintage Huey helicopter. Newspaper articles and TV newscasts on Facebook on John Chua's page, and mine. We have two ongoing exhibits - one on the Singapore PWD workshop and PWD 2011 Photo Exhibit (culled from various exhibits from all over the Philippines) and one called "Colors of A Spectrum" by children with Autism in Baguio City, north of Manila. Filipino photographers in LA and NJ are planning to do these PWD workshops as well.

Throughout the month, José Vera Gallery will be exhibiting the work of international artists, hosting fund raising events, and accepting donations on behalf of relief organizations that are offering direct and immediate support to the Haitian people, including: Hope for Haiti (www.hopeforhaiti.com), and All Hands Volunteers (www.hands.org).

One year has passed since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the already impoverished country of Haiti, causing widespread death, injury and homelessness. The people of Haiti are still struggling with basic material needs, and a year later, hundreds of thousands are still living in tents. Bureaucratic corruption continues to delay recovery efforts, and the recent Cholera outbreak exposed flaws in humanitarian health care, resulting in public distrust of foreign aid. To put it lightly, the country of Haiti still needs assistance.

The 100-Mile Runners at the Finish Line Project began in 2004. Larry Gassan saw a unique opportunity to make portraits of a unique sports subculture. Typical running photos are sports photojournalism, color pictorials, and casual snapshots. His portraits are made in a mobile studio, shooting in black and white, with a near-vintage medium-format Hasselblad 500C. Elapsed time for the portraits is usually less than 60 seconds. Gassan’s experiences as a 100-mile finisher are essential, and his intimate knowledge of the sport’s conventions and customs were critical. He’d finished nine 100-mile races between 1991-1998, three of them at the Angeles Crest 100-Mile Endurance Run. Peak training mileage before a 100 often exceeded 120 miles per week, with 70 mile weekends the norm. Gassan’s photo reference points are Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, August Sander, Gary Winogrand, and a little Helmut Newton.
